Sometimes I wonder if the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it. - Mark Twain

I don't even want to think about it
The other day, while I was driving to work, I was listening to the "8 at 8" - a local radio show that has 8 songs with a common theme and starts at 8 a.m. The theme: songs from 1994. That was the year I graduated from high school, which made me think, "Holy shit!" It's been 20 years - or it will be, this fall - since I started high school.
And let me tell you, I hated every minute of it (except summer vacations, spring breaks, and winter breaks.) I did not go to the graduation ceremony. I stayed home and was happy as hell.
Joey sometimes does a Top 10 Tuesday - so here's a Top 10 Thursday, with the Top 10 things I do not miss about being in high school:
1. Stupid rich kids getting stoned in the car on the way to school in new cars their Stanford professor and Silicon Valley tech parents bought them, and replaced when they crashed them.
2. Teachers hitting on us.
3. Catty bitches. Come to think of it, I still hate catty bitches, but I don't have to deal with them on a daily basis.
4. Using condoms. I hate them, hate them, HATE THEM. Fortunately, I grew up in an area where there was no question that we'd have sex ed in school, and the community pounded it into us (no pun intended) to have safe sex. Come to think of it, that's something I hate to live with hating until moving in with Mr. RK.
5. Having to take pre-calculus and never, ever having fucking used it once.
6. The nonstop Bob Marley/Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd/The Grateful Dead soundtrack that was always, always on in the background, somewhere. I can't listen to any of these groups now because I got so sick of it.
7. Having to analyze "what the writers are trying to show you" in books that were a) boring, b) poorly written, and c) probably way over-analyzed.
8. Having to sit through classes that were super boring. I did enjoy literature, creative writing, geology, Spanish and sociology.
9. Having 25 minutes for lunch. I adopted the habit of eating too fast, which I am unlearning just now, and it wreaked havoc on my system, I'm sure.
10. Carrying loads of fucking books everywhere. Now the only ones I have to carry are ones *I* want to read.
How about you?

What are you trying to show us? Is there a calculus problem in there someplace? Hey, have you ever huffed Mile Maker Supreme and then listened to "Stairway To Heaven"?
I graduated in '99.
I don't miss high school. I was ruthlessly teased, and I never fit it. Totally awkward time.
Oh, and women were total catty biotches to me.
So glad it's over.
I'm a little bit younger than you. It seems I was entering high school as you were leaving it.
Here's what I'm not missing about high school.
1. Cock teases... Wait, I still have to deal with these bitches from time to time.
2. People telling me Nirvana is worth listening to.
3. Having to analyze "what the Canadian writers are trying to show you" in books that were a) boring, b) poorly written, and c) definitely way over-analyzed.
4. Having no use for the condoms that I was given. Actually, that still bothers me a bit.
5. Not enough Led Zeppelin. No such thing as too much Zeppelin.
I don't miss high school one bit either! I just became FB friends with someone I knew in HS but she wasn't a friend, one of those catty, ditsy, popular girls. I am again realizing why we weren't friends then. Some people never change...
I was fat and was treated like shit in high school.
I was even treated like shit at my high school reunions.
At my 15 year reunion (1998), my wife and I were so disrespected by the drunken yahoos that were my classmates, that after I got home, I fired off a handwritten missive to the organizers telling them in no uncertain terms that they should never, ever, darken my mailbox with an invitation again.
Have not been bothered since.
What I didn't like about high school was the boring teachers, who were not teaching anymore. The cutting back in art classes..how dare they? What I did like about high school: the day they changed from a all girl school into a mixed school (and I did not tell my parents).
I disliked high school, too. I did go to the graduation, but skipped all proms. My boyfriend (later husband, now ex-husband) was in college and I didn't want to put him through that. I hung out with the nice people - never had much use for the catty girls. One of them has hung on to high school for dear life and organizes the reunions and sends emails with classmate updates and ridiculous forwards. She and I had a huge email fight when I asked her to stop sending me conservative diatribes and that offended her. :)
Thank God for Spanish class, Chica...or you wouldn't get half the shit I write about! lol
I think I saw a condom up close ONCE. (I've been with my husband FOREVER.)
PS - What I hated about school: I hated so-called "cool" kids who poked fun at other kids that were actually cooler than the "cool" kids.
What age is high school? Is that like Senior school in the UK?
It's so long ago I can't remember! Seems like a life time away, but I'm sure no teacher hit on me!
Joe--high school is about age 13 or so to around 18 or so. Probably the worst year of everybody's lives (except, of course, for "those guys."
What I hated about high school?
High School.
Wishing I hit some people.
Wishing I talked to more girls. If I recall, I talked to the class dream girl at our 10 year reunion, but of course, she was already married.
Should have skipped more classes.
I eat way too fast to begin with, so I was okay with that.
I did like dumping mashed potatos at a teacher's driveway one day, and him questioning everybody about it in class the next day. RK, you can ask about that one when we speak next!!! And my spanish teacher was awesome. Illy, if you're reading this, I can understand some of what you're saying in espanol! :)
FB: Nah, can't say I have ;)
S: I felt the same way about never fitting.
WIGSF: Good list. I'm 33. You?
A: There were quite a few shallow people at my h.s. too...probably still are.
G: That sucks. Good for you for telling the reunion people to fuck off!
H: Good points!
L: That's funny - the most offensive people get offended when we tell them to back off. Sooooo, an older man? :)
Ily: Forever is right! I hated the emotional bullies in high school - I always stuck up for the kids who got picked on.
Joey: The four years before college/university (for me, age 14-17.) I'm sure you can remember if you think hard enough ;)
Mike: Who do you know who was 13 in high school?! Now I'm dying to know about the mashed potatoes!!!!
How are you avoiding dealing with catty bitches daily? That's what I want to know!
Having to analyze "what the writers are trying to show you" in books that were a) boring, b) poorly written, and c) probably way over-analyzed.
Replace the word "books" with...well...just about anything. There does not always have to be a message, the intent of the author/director/figurehead does not override my comprehension, and so forth
MZ: Still not dealing well...just try to ignore them. Happily not meeting them in the quantities that I did in high school!
Darth: So true. Happy birthday, btw!
UGH... Not fitting in. Real life is so much easier after High School. Now I have an endless amount of folks I can choose to be friends with.... or not. (it's liberating really)
