It is to laugh

Mr. RK has an idea for another kid's book, "Animals You Should Not Pet, and What Will Happen If You Do." What do you think?

You've all noticed, I'm sure, that I love to laugh. I also love to make other people laugh. Growing up, no one at school or church believed that the naughty jokes I heard were from him. It was sort of like growing up with Weird Al.

After telling an inappopriate joke at Sunday school: "WHO told you THAT?"
Me: "My dad."

Who was the pastor of the church.

"HE DID NOT!!"

I love that Mr. RK makes me laugh constantly as well. I wish I could be as clever.

While we're on the subject of laughing, today we went to see my little sister's school holiday "Songfest."

I was almost in the giggle loop the whole time, with my dad on one side whispering jokes in my ear and my brother doing the same on the other side. Kids are hilarious because they don't have so many social filters. I saw more scratching in inappropriate places, more signing off key and loudly - you remember the Bible verse about "making a joyful noise"?

Then they sang Hannukah songs and my brother whispers, "Why does every one of these sound like the part in Fiddler on the Roof where people are getting kicked out of their homes?"

(An aside - my own family stock is composed of Swiss Jews, Apaches, Irish and all kinds of characteres that I am only now learning about, including my dad's transvestite great Uncle Louie, who lived that way openly in Iowa with no trouble. He must have been an Executive Transvestite.*)

My dad leaned over and said, "Why is it that if it's your kid, it's the best thing in the world, but if it's someone else's, it's just god-awful?!"

That's the million dollar question, isn't it?

*If you haven't seen Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill, you really, really must.

Yes! Another giggle loop reference! are they stacking?

I think the answer to your question is much like that about baby phots:

Doting parent (meaning it):"Isn't my baby cute?"
Peope who still have their vision, are NOT the parent, and are honest:" actually, no. Tiny, scrunched, flat out repulsive.

People who still have their vision, are not the parent, but have good taste:"What a lovely child"

Me: "To know about the giggle loop is to be part of the giggle loop."

If our family hadn't taken vacations every summer I might not have known my dad. He was a preacher too but he was working 24 hours a day it seemed. Then we would go on vacation and he would relax like no other and laugh and tell jokes and pat or pinch my mama's behind. Laughter is truly the best medicine for everyone and my spouse hands it out in large doses too.

Sounds like you have a great relationship with your dad. I can relate to that - my dad and I have the same sense of laughing at the absurd. I was sitting next to him at my cousin's wedding a few years ago - a strange wedding and very fundamentalist with "submit to your husband" references. At the end of the ceremony, instead of kissing, the bride and groom turned around and sang a song to the wedding guests. Dad kept poking me and it was hard enough to keep a straight face as it was. :) I'm glad you have that, too.

My word verification is pappe.

I don't have time to laugh. Where's my crackberry?

What was the joke that you told? It wasn't the one about the Scotsmen and the sheep was it? Cause I was a bit disgusted when you told that one to me.

My parents BOTH tell "inappropriate" jokes and my whole family loves to laugh. We're extremely sarcastic (in a nonoffensive way...most of the time). I think you'd enjoy my family (with your Spanish/English book on slang).

I can't wait to hear more about your children's book. Hope you write it before my son's out of grade school!

PS - Executive Transvestite...now he sounds like an interesting character! :)

He nailed it! Other people's kids bug me way more than mine do, except today, my kids are being sort of annoying today. But I still love them!

I love people that can make me laugh too. My Brother can have my in fits of giggles as soon as he opens his mouth. Good times!

C: I suppose it is a hobby, isn't it?
Lynn: That is hilarious!
FB: As promised, I will never have a crackberry :)
RT: As I recall YOU told ME.
Ily: I think I would adore your family...don't worry, I'm up on the slang!
GT: Thanks!
A: I think my version is that all kids are irritating except my siblings. It's a family thing. :)
