Your thoughts on opera?

I'm going to swipe the "Question of the Week" from Grannie Annie.

Do you like opera?

Or does it strike you, as Eddie Izzard has put it, as sounding like someone is swinging a cat?

It's funny - I took a college class on Opera. Just an elective in my last semester and I quite enjoyed it. I wouldn't want a steady diet of it, but I've seen Carmen and Tosca in the theater and I enjoyed it. (They have these subtitle things they hang down.) But there's nothing about that that makes me want to listen to an entire CD or radio broadcast of an opera. I just like to hear famous arias now and then.

I've actually never been to an opera, but so maybe I'm missing something that can only appreciated hearing it live, but no I can't stand it. Or maybe I just don't understand it.

I LURVES opera, Riot Kitty, although yes, it is an acquired taste. For those who want to become opera lovers, I recommend starting off listening to individual opera singers and individual arias. Once you're really into that, try listening to a full-scale opera CD or DVD.

One of my Co-workers (back in 1995) was going to School to learn Opera. He would sing for us at the end of the day and it was beautiful.

I so wanted to attend Pavarati but alas he is not with us any more.

RC: I agree.
L: So everything in moderation?
Joey: Honestly, I can't either.
D: Sorry, I don't fall into that category of want ;)
M: He did have a good voice, I'll give you that.
C: Me too!!

I like to have it on as background music on the weekends. It makes me feel cultured. *snort* And I like to imagine what the words are they're singing. "Now I'm really huuuuunnnngry ... please make me a sandwiiiiiiiichhhhhhhh ..."

I once listened to an opera that was sung in English and I STILL couldn't understand a damn word.

I would rather watch a two hours special on Wendall Wilkie, presidential candidate who ran against FDR on "American History presented by C-SPAN TV", than listen to opera.

BTW, this was a real episode on a real program on a real network.
