Non-political, non-incendiary...just curious

I mailed a package to my parents Saturday. Because of the 13-ounce rule - if a package weighs more than 13 ounces, you must hand it to a retail clerk or, well, the post office will eat it or blow it up or something - I handed the package to a clerk after paying for postage at a machine.

Just a note for the future, she says - the 13-ounce rule only applies to stamped mail.

Versus mail with a "postage paid" label.

So please do tell me: was this rule put into place because the Unabomber was more likely to use stamps? Does this help make us safer from, say, getting our fingers stuck in the mailbox?

Inquiring minds want to know!

PS And no, the image has nothing to do with this post...I just thought it was appropriate.

I am here because of your comment at Scarlet's "but most of the people who claim to speak for him are full of shit,..." You are so right on.

I've seen your comments often and decided to take a look at your blog. Yes, I too am curious about the rules and regs of the Post Office.

Good point.

Btw, I like the Sesame Street theme you have going on here. Who's next, Big Bird? ;)

face it, if even half the "safety" regulations made sense or were effective, it would be a different world. Did you see the New Yorker bit by the guy who boarded a plane with a forged boarding pass, nail clippers, knife, and larger than allowed bottle of liquid because it was eye-wash solution?

You know, I never made the Sesame Street connection...I don't have a secret muppet fetish or anything ;)

As a mole in the USPS, I have found we are shrouded in secrecy, layered in insulation and will let no one learn the truth. After 29 years in the po, my theory is that they (whoever they are) get together for a party, get s###faced and then make policy.
